2025 Grand Seiko new Spring Drive
Spring Drive UFA Watches: SLGB001, SLGB003
Grand Seiko's new Spring Drive Caliber 9RB2, bearing the "Ultra-Fine Precision" (UFA) designation, represents a major achievement in watchmaking. Even with a quartz oscillator, the accuracy is maintained within ±20 seconds per year, an incredible achievement. Seiko has previously used the term "very fine adjustment" (VFA) to describe extremely precise watches, but "ultra" takes things to a whole new level.
Previous generations of Spring Drive have achieved an accuracy of ±10 or ±15 seconds per month, which was already impressive. Unlike typical quartz watches, the Spring Drive movement (the only completely smooth, non-ticking movement in the industry, thanks to electromagnetic braking) is still driven by a mainspring, requiring no battery. Grand Seiko's manufacturing process is virtually unparalleled. Seiko not only develops its own quartz crystals but now also ages them for three months. Furthermore, they've improved their temperature compensation capabilities by refining the circuit board.
The Caliber 9RB2 debuts in two versions in the Evolution 9 collection, both with a diameter of 37 mm and featuring the same wicker basketweave dial texture. The high-strength titanium model (SLGB003) comes with a three-link bracelet, while the platinum model (SLGB001) features a dark blue alligator leather strap with a folding clasp. The SLGB001's dial is silvery-blue, while the SLGB003's is solid silver.
However, perhaps the most satisfying feature of the SLGB003 is its new tool-free micro-adjustable clasp. While I consider Grand Seiko's straps to be of excellent quality, many disagree and have been clasping for such a clasp.
