What got you interested in networking? - nightfox818 - 12-24-2024

So I am curious... what got you interested in networking?

I'll start! Back in 2003, I got online and started learning about websites. This naturally started expanding into networking. We didn't have broadband internet back then (we were still on dial-up) but I started looking for a way that we could share the printer that was attached to my mom's computer since I needed it for school. I had my own laptop that I used to work on school work, but I wanted the benefits of being able to print from my laptop to the printer. So we got a wireless D-Link router and that was our first wireless network and LAN. From there, I learned a lot about networking at home. Since I was expanding my knowledge online, I found the podcast The Broken and this taught me things like war driving. From there, I found Cisco and enterprise networking. My high school turned out to have a Cisco technical program which I enrolled in for my junior and senior years. Naturally, I aced the class (literally - I had over 100% grade), participated in BPA (Business Professionals of America) and scored high in the networking competitions. Like I was once number 3 in all of Ohio. Exciting stuff. While I was in high school, I worked with my school's tech department which is how I learned about enterprise-grade networking in the real world. Once I graduated and got out in the real world, I really went out for networking. Helped build up a business that was on a flat network all the way to an MPLS network, working with T-1, worked for a major ISP, and now I have an IaaS provider and I really love working on the network side.

I can't wait to hear your story!
